- Epiphytic shrub on base of treetrunk, growing in low, densely stemmed Elfin forest, very rich in lichens,mosses and epiphytes. The thick woody basal part up to 1 cm. in diam. Stems up to 1 m. long. Leaves rather thick fleshy somewhat glossy green above, also glossy but much paler and with prominent red brown midrib beneath. Stipules long, persistent. Male flower: Tepals 4. Outer bigger tepals obovate, 5x3 mm., wine-red with white edge all around. Inner tepals oblanceolate, 5x1.5 mm., wine red with white edge on top. Stamens ca. 15, anthers yellow, pressed against each other. Young fruits wine-red, with pale lenticel-like spot terete.
